About this product

Product Information

Stanley Kubrick's final film is a mature, highly intelligent, thrilling masterpiece of sexual obsession and marital (in)fidelity. Tom Cruise stars as Bill Harford, a doctor who becomes obsessed with a sexual fantasy that his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), confesses to him. Although the fantasy (involving a naval officer) occurred only in Alice's mind, Bill can't get it out of his own head; his obsession leads him through a series of potential sexual encounters, each one surrounded by the specter of death. His whole world threatens to unravel as he falls deeper and deeper into a web of mystery, lies, and deceit.<BR>Kubrick's film breathes with vivid blues, reds, and blacks, the threat of illicit sex and death lurking around every corner. Cruise and Kidman, who are married in real life, are utterly convincing as a happy couple suddenly forced to reexamine their faith in each other. Sidney Pollack, Todd Field, Julienne Davis, Marie Richardson, and Vinessa Shaw sparkle in minor roles. Based on the novella TRAUMNOVELLE by Arthur Schnitzler, EYES WIDE SHUT is a brilliant examination of the psychological nature of sex and marriage, of faith and faithlessness, of obsession and desire. Kubrick said that his last film (he died shortly before the film opened) was my best film ever; while that is debatable, there is no doubting that the film is a splendid finale to a glorious career.

  • A beautiful film classic in the definitive unretouched full-frame presentation!

The UK DVD edition is great because it is a full-frame presentation without the CGI figures that were added for the US edition to meet MPAA. I therefore consider this the definitive edition, even compared to more recent Blu-Ray editions which are cropped for 16:9 HDTV. The transfer is good and retains the gritty feel of the 35mm negatives that were pushed two stops to achieve a specific look, again different from the Blu-Ray editions that look a little too cleaned-up for my taste. So glad to find this! Clearly, this is a film I care a lot about. I think it is masterful, a truly dreamlike experience full of detail and meaning that bear repeated viewing, like a favorite novel well-loved. In particular, it is a great look into Kubrick's take on NYC society at the end of the 20th century, into its decadence and decay, and simultaneously a commentary on commercial film audiences and how their expectations affect their reading of the picture. Viewing the film with this in mind brings added appreciation and richness, but it stands well on its own, with several memorable moments and characters that are arguably more compelling and interesting than the lead role itself. A bit of a deliberate pace, but a great ride. Enjoy!

  • Strangely compelling, erotic and quite scary!

I almost turned this off early on but I'm so glad that I didn't. This is a kind of conspiracy thriller with a difference - I suspect Kubrick was pointing at societies with secrets and bygone 'lifestyle clubs' like the infamous 'Hellfire Club'. It's also a nod at powerfull men who indulge in debauched activities in private and protected venues and what measures they might take to keep that quiet. It's a scary scenario of a world that is alien to most of us .......but may exist.Kidman and Cruise perform well as do the supporting cast.

  • Final film from Kubrick

Kubrick's final film does not disappoint-As with all of his output this film requires repeated viewing so you can pick up on all the layered nuances he presents. Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman star as husband & wife - they were married at the time & their breakup shortly afterwards had been widely covered in the media. The film covers many subjects including relationships, fidelity, power struggles & secret societies. Obviously with Kubrick these subjects are just the thin veneer to what is actually going on. Lots of colour theory on screen with red & blue being linked to certain issues but you can work that out for yourself, Enjoy!
