Groundbreaking and iconic classic
This movie is a classic. I was 26 when it came out in 1992. It was groundbreaking! A female-led outlaw movie? Yeehah! I loved it, and so did many who went to see it. When I went to see it, the cinema stood up and cheered in one key scene, and sat there and sobbed in another. It was very moving.
This movie represented the stand that many of us women wanted to take (and were taking in various ways). Sexism was alive and well, and we women were sick to death of it (and still are!). Thelma and Louise, in the aftermath of a tragedy, left their chains behind, told their men to take a hike, and found their freedom, albeit short-lived.
Twenty-seven years later, this is still in my top five favourite movies of all time. I never get tired of these women, of this story, or of the production elements (music, scenery, etc). And let's not forget that then-unknown cowboy dripping sex like shiny diamonds who made every straight woman and gay man in that audience gawk wide-mouthed like drooling idiots. I sat bolt upright in my seat and said aloud during the movie, "Who the h*ll is THAT?"
The commentary on this video is ok, not brilliant. Susan and Geena have some interesting things to say, and so does Callie, but much of the commentary is actually a spliced-in interview of Callie going on and on about the writing of the movie. What she has to say is interesting, but it is interview or documentary material, not commentary material. It's a shame the producers of the special features didn't do the commentary with just Geena and Susan, and leave Callie's comments in the other special feature (included on this DVD) that they spliced it from.
Ridley Scott's commentary isn't great either. He spends the first 10 or 15 minutes talking about himself, then large chunks of time throughout the movie talking about his other movies and other directors, etc, with some interesting commentary about this movie interspersed.
But, aside from the mediocre commentary, the movie itself is spectacular, and for me, personally, an iconic and important part of my youth.
