About this product

Product Information

Collecting 10 games on one disc, Konami Arcade Classics for the PlayStation includes the following retro titles: Scramble, Super Cobra, Time Pilot, Pooyan, Gyruss, Roc 'N Rope, Circus Charlie, Road Fighter, Shao-Lin's Road and Yie Ar Kung-Fu.

Scramble (1981) is a side scrolling (left to right) shooter in which you shoot at and drop bombs on enemy missiles. The missiles take off from the surface of a craggy, mountainous alien planet. You must periodically refuel your ship by destroying fuel tanks that appear along the planet's surface. Super Cobra (1981) is the sequel to Scramble and is very similar.

Time Pilot (1982) puts you in control of a futuristic spaceship that rotates on an invisible axis in the center of the screen. You can fly and shoot in any direction, but your ship stays anchored to the center of the playfield. Your job is to destroy 56 enemy crafts and a boss in each of the five levels of play. You'll travel through time to 1910, 1940, 1970, 1982 and 2001. In Gyruss (1983), you pilot your ship in a circular pattern around the outer edges of the playfield while flying to the different planets of the universe and shooting wave after wave of enemy ships.

If you get tired of outer space shoot-'em-ups, you can join the circus. Circus Charlie (1984) has you entering six events: Fire Rings, Tight Rope, Ball Walk, Horseback, Trampoline and Flying Trapeze. Each event involves moving from right to left while executing a series of timed jumps. If the circus is not your thing, you can become an archeologist in Roc 'N Rope (1983). This game puts you on a quest to catch the golden bird. Armed with an enemy-stunning flashlight and a rope for climbing ledges, you must gather golden eggs and make it to the top of the screen in each of four stages.

If you'd rather fight than play games, take on Yie Ar Kung-Fu (1985), an early prototype of sorts for games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. You must punch and kick a series of computer-controlled opponents into oblivion. A bar at the top of the screen indicates how much damage both fighters have sustained. Shao-Lin's Road (1985) is a fighting game in which you must kick all the enemies (including bosses) off the playfield; each screen is made up of several platforms on which you and your enemies can fight and jump. Some bad guys, depending on their color, release power-ups when kicked.

Despite its title, Road Fighter (1984) is not a fighting game. It is an overhead view, vertically scrolling racing game in which you try to pass 39 cars in order to come in first place. You can move left and right, and you can speed up and slow down. If you crash too many times or drive too slowly, you will never even finish the race, much less come in first place.

If the aforementioned titles don't put food in your trough, you can make a pig of yourself with Pooyan (1982). This wacky little game puts you in the role of a mother pig trying to protect her children from being kidnapped by big bad wolves. You maneuver vertically on a pulley near the right side of the screen. To keep your piglets safe, you must fire bows and arrows or heavy meat at balloon-riding wolves that float up (in the first stage) and down (in the second stage).

Despite the fact that many gaming magazines have reported to the contrary, Konami Arcade Classics is indeed analog control and vibration function compatible. A brief history lesson is included with each of the 10 titles.

  • Worth the buy!!!!

Nice games. Brings back memories of the golden age of video games. Disk includes: Pooyan, Cyrus, Scramble,Time Pilot and some karate games I don't remember. I forgot how challenging they are. Konami, the Japanese company, was known for challenging games.Only drawback is lack of demos for each games. It just ask if you want to continue. For me, seeing demos play was a highlight I could never enjoy on Atari 2600. Still, worth the buy.

  • Not arcade perfect, but good for Konami fans.

The graphics aren't arcade perfect graphically. I play a few of those games in an arcade an hour away from home - I ordered this so I would be able to play those games at home too. Still most of the games are good fun and it is rare to find most of those games in home consoles rather than portable consoles. If you like the games then buy this collection.

A great collection of games I played in the arcade35 years ago. The controls don't translate very well to a PS1 but I'll have to adapt.
