Based on the best-selling novel by T. Coraghessan Boyle, THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE satirizes late-19th-century health fads and medical procedures. The story focuses on Will Lightbody (Matthew Broderick) and his wife, Eleanor (Bridget Fonda), guests at the health spa of cereal mogul Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (Anthony Hopkins). The vacationing couple get more than they bargain for, however, when doctors separate the couple and force them to undergo an array of hilariously absurd medical treatments. Meanwhile, con artist Charles Ossining (John Cusack) and Kellogg's adopted son (Dana Carvey) plot to steal the doctor's coveted recipe for corn flakes. THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE's highbrow humor lies somewhere between the stinging ironies of Terry Gilliam's BRAZIL and the spontaneous, madcap wit of the sketch comedy television show THE KIDS IN THE HALL. As he displayed in ANGEL HEART and PINK FLOYD: THE WALL, director Alan Parker is wonderfully adept at combining magic and mirth to make movies that entertain while subtly pressing forth a pointed moral lesson. Great Naughty Fun.
Chock full of stars and character actors from 1994, this story adapted from the book by T.C. Boyle makes great, naughty fun of the health craze from the early 20th century. The first viewing of this left me hurting from the laughter.

Cereal Wars? Yes, Battle Creek had ‘em
As far as I can tell, the basic story underlying this film’s plot is essentially accurate. Of course, it’s not completely historically accurate… but the rivalry between the Kelloggs… and among a host of cereal startups in Battle Creek, MI… makes for a film that is not only funny, but even poignant at times. It’s worth repeated viewings.

FINALLY! A perfect error free copy!
FINALLY! After years of searching...and four tries later....I finally found a perfect copy of this wonderful wacky movie! The other copies would freeze up or shut the player down. This one plays perfectly all the way through! Anthony Hopkins gives a spot on performance as the zany Dr. Kellogg and Dana Carvey plays his adopted son, who gives him grief at the sanatarium until they finally make up at the end. Matthew Broderick gives plenty of laughs too.
