A great future
Where his previous releases To the Bone and Hand Cannot Erase were more guitar oriented prog rock masterpieces, this time he has gone almost full on electronic on this album. Yet where Smashing Pumpkins have taken the poppier route to their latest foray into electronica and Gary Numan always had a moodier sombre approach, Steven Wilson manages to utilise it so well he could still pull it off as a modern sounding prog rock album. His guitar is largely absent this time but tracks like King Ghost and the albums highlight Personal Shopper (clocking in at nearly 10 minutes) sound exceeding timeless. Follower is slightly rockier with amazing melodies and count of unease is an excellent slow number which finishes the album well. This is an album where SW has taken a huge risk and succeeded.
