  • Brilliant brilliant series

This is by far the best boxset I've ever watched, its absolutely mesmerising and I can't stop watching. I don't usually watch boxsets straight off but I just have to watch this back to back, its so gripping. I'm now on the last series and I shall be devastated to come to the end as theres another series apparently that you can't buy yet, so shall have to watch for that coming out on dvd. The characters are absolutely excellent, every one, the casting is superb, you can engage with every one, some you love (Ragnar!!!) and some you hate with a passion but that makes it all such gripping viewing. I must admit as a granny Iol that I find some of the scenes very very violent and hard to watch, more violence and bloodshed than I can usually stomach, whoever devised some of the torture/death scenes has a very vivid imagination, but it all adds to the breathtaking storeylines, and its not just the baddies that meet bad ends, I've actually been moved to tears at some of the scenes (granny syndrome again). So if you like fanatastic drama/very scary fight scenes/over the top bloodshed/torture then this is for you !! But the story itself just keeps you watching Buy and watch with anticipation, worth every penny !

  • Surprisingly smart

I bought Vikings because it looked pretty good, much in the mold of Rome or Game of Thrones, but I had few expectations other than that it would be slick and entertaining. It is so much more (akin to both Rome AND Game of Thrones) - the narrative leaves you guessing; the characters twist and turn, some (like Ragnar) are genius, whilst others (Horic, Jarl Berg) simply flail in his wake. But with a family like his (Lagertha especially but increasingly Bjorn) and his comrade, Floki, well, even though there are tensions and disagreements, the intelligence and cohesion are quite spellbinding. What really hooked me were the forays into religion - not something I've seen elsewhere - and the equation between older theologies and more recent inventions. So that the series introduces us to concept and metaphor which are entirely suitable and yet all too rare in a piece of epic historical drama. This, along with the strands of character development (where a character lives long enough!) have continued into the Norse infiltrations into both Britain and Frankia, with the Vikings learning from trial and error and impending doom seeming to hang over any who oppose them. Which when you consider the Norman hegemony which came to grasp all of Europe during the next milenium is pretty clever.

  • Did not fail to please

The storyline is great and follows on from the previous episodes and series. The battle within Ragnar Lothbrok between Viking and Christian is as interesting as the series itself. Some interesting twists and surprises that do not fail to keep my interest, cannot wait until I have access to Series 4 Part 2. After leaving Rollo in Paris, Rollo wins over the favour of Princess Gisla with some humorous scenes. Queen Qwenthrith's escape is a well planned event with an interesting twist. Bjorn's journey of himself in the wilderness bears fruits as he returns knowing who he is and what he wants. Lagertha seeks revenge as the woman scorned by having her title taken away, but for how long!!!
