The best rendering on this wonderful story.
Perfectly cast and so superior to the original version. Directed with such sensitivity and beautiful photography. The two main characters, played by Joanna Vanderham, who is unfailingly excellent in everything she does, and Ben Batt are perfectly matched, while the young boy, played by Jack Hollington, is likely to steal any scene he's in.

Too explanatory.
I've seen the original and read the book. This version is too literal and doesn't leave things unsaid like real life, to my mind. Actors are great.

Fascinating Julie Christie at her best
I was delighted to find this available having loved the original in a cinema years ago. It provided an excellent contrast to a BBC new version. It has many memorable moments but the chemistry between Juklie and Alan Bates leaps off the screen

This remake is an acceptable film , but I found it lacking in atmosphere and feeling , it seemed to skip through the story as if they were rushing to get it finished . it most definitely not as good as the 1971 version which is brilliant .
