Fowle (Attenborough) has murdered his wife Doris because her constant laughing finally drove him to distraction. He is put on trial and defended by over-the-hill attorney Morgenhall (Sellers), who makes a terrible case for his client. Although Fowle admits his guilt, his lawyer insists on pleading innocent so he can give the courtroom performance of a lifetime. John Mortimer adapted the script from his own comic play, "The Dock Brief."
