    Classic Cult sci fi tv

First watched blakes seven when first broadcast back in 1978 so this dvd was a definite trip down memory lane.created by Terry nation(of dalek fame) blakes seven is a dark dystopian sci fi future similar to 1984 with a totalitarian state called the terran federation running the show led by the deliciously sexy servalan.opposing this tyranny is central character Blake and his bunch of fellow rebels with the standout character being Avon played superbly by the late Paul darrow.it won't be everyone's cup of tea but if your a fan of cult sci fi tv then you'll love it.

Absolutely loved this at the time, but it hasn’t dated well at all.

The BBC was always embarrassed by science fiction, sometimes with good reason (Dr Who at it’s ropiest was something to be embarrassed about) and here it is no different, but nothing can come of nothing - the budget was pitiful; The miracle was there was anything worth watching at all. I loved this as an 8 yr old, was horrified by the VHS releases I borrowed in my late 20s and now, in my 50s, I find myself in a more forgiving frame of mind. The BBC spent nothing on this, it was shot on video (not film), clearly wasn’t stored well (some Dr Who wound up in a skip!) and it was, as is the case today, often in danger of cancellation. If a fuzzy picture, questionable special effects and the occasionally spectacularly duff episode doesn’t bother you too much you may find something to enjoy here, but it is of it’s time, and it is probably more of interest to those who grew up with it on our screens. It is not slick. If you aren’t a science fiction buff you’ll probably hate it, but compared to the insufferably pleased with itself ‘social workers in space’ shininess of Star Treks ‘Next Generation’ it has something to be said for it. Watching RSC ac-tors, plainly meant for something better, performing this stuff with a straight face is almost worth the price of admission all by itself and it is here that Blake’s 7s strengths lie - they were really very, very good. And it must have been very difficult. Star Wars was released in this period. This in itself must have been disheartening. I enjoyed this for old times sake, could plainly see why I had loved it and found much to like about it still. If you watch waiting to be impressed, you won’t be, but if you try to ignore the flaws and enjoy the strengths then you just might. I went to school with Gareth Thomas’ son. I watched them all as they came out. Are they clunky and rushed? Certainly. Could they have been better? Certainly. Yet under profoundly unfavourable circumstances it had something. It has it still. I was VERY sorry to hear about Paul Darrow’s demise, his efforts to develop Blakes 7 beyond the series coming to nothing. Galaxy Quest was realistic in that respect; Sometimes actors have only this one moment and then it is conventions and audio books.

  • Blake's 7, a simple and clean indulgence of past TV

Really worth giving this 70's British TV series a re-visit. Yes the GFX of the BBC was mind-bogglingly bad, the sets were bad, the science was bad but the stories are good with an oddly attractive school playground politics played out in space and spaceships. All good fun!
