The thief, Albert Spica, (Gambon) is a gangster, repugnant and boorish, who holds court at the same table in his opulent restaurant every night surrounded by his lackeys (Tim Roth and the late Ian Dury included). When his cultured and repressed wife Georgina (Mirren) becomes magnetically attracted to a solitary diner in the restaurant, the two begin a secret affair under the nose of her dangerous husband. With the help of the restaurant's chef, the time the lovers share is kept secret from the vicious Albert...for a while. Despite the breathtaking production design and artful camera work, this violent, disturbing and very darkly comic work is not for everyone. Those with the stomach for it, however, will reap generous rewards.

    Mirren & Gambon at the top of their game

    Along with 'Prospero's Books' this is my favourite of Peter Greenaway's films. His movies don't always hit it off (always a risk with experimental works) but this film gets 10 out of 10 for all the right reasons. Helen Mirren and Michael Gambon both clearly revel in their respective roles. Gambon as a misogynistic gangster and Mirren as his classy but bullied wife. The backing soundtrack from Michael Nyman glides wonderfully through each scene and the ever changing costumes are a delight. This is art dressed as film - a well crafted masterpiece and recommended.

    This not a movie for thoughs that are squeamish or easily offended it is a well made movie can only recommend it to open minded viewers it's one of them films that should be 21 plus. But should not be censored

    Fabulous Peter Greenaway film - can't recommend enough

    Wonderful acting, cinema photography, narrative, script, mix of sensuality and sexuality, danger and safety, greed, possessiveness, murderousness and revenge, culinary delights and incredible pulsing film score by Michael Nyman. Whats there NOT to love...absolutely nothing!
