High quality quality product with a lot of functionality.
It took some time getting it setup (mostly because I am new to NAS devices), but it is high quality and operates perfectly. I especially like the ability to shutdown my PC over the local network when power is lost at my Smart UPS and it detects that the UPS battery is low. I was very pleased that it also had the ability to be accessed remotely even with my dynamic IP address. The ability to shutdown my PC over the network was not well documented. Highly configurable
I started with a DS918+ and was so happy with it I then bought 2 DS 418's to replace 2 older Seagate NSA. These are sooo much faster and much more configurable it is like moving into the next century. Even using one as a DHCP server now. For the price I paid it's a good buy.
Could not run some virtual machines that run on linux KVM and this product needs to support more memory. 8Gig is simply not enough ram. Snology has changed something in the Surveillance Station application so now some of my cameras don't work. Overall the machine is ok but what really hurts it is it seems to be a bit slower than I expected and virtualization is limited. Nice upgrade from prior Synology NAS
I had a Synology DS416J with 512mg memory. It worked well for several years but was just slow. I moved the HD from the ds416 over to the ds918. It's day and night different. Love the speed of the new NAS.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Compact unit and little noise unless moving lots of files
