  • Great fun... eventually!

There are so many positive things to say about this game: the materials used, the detail on the miniatures, the real Star Trek feel to the game and the depth ofthe gameplay. However, there are two negatives: [1] The rules are extremely complicated, especially if you haven't played a similar kind of game before. There are masses of things to remember, and, to be honest, the design of the rulebooks is fairly poor (both in layout and tiny print). After several frustrating hours, I resorted to Google and managed to download some fan-made breakdowns and flowcharts which simplified things a bit. Even so, this is a very "heavy" game - but once you've have mastered the intricacies of it, you'll be able to enjoy the game's great depth. [2] In the game, you face Romulan and Borg enemies. You are also able to recruit special personal from planets and space station to help you (in the form of bonuses they give)... I'm sorry, but what utter idiot thought some of those special personnel should be Romulans - who would obviously never help you in any way? This is plain daft and should have never made it through the proof-testing stage of the game's development. Especially when you consider there are hundreds of alternative characters from Star Trek series' and movies. This spoils the feeling of depth and "Star Trekness" the game has. Overall: there is a great game in here, but it takes a lot of effort to learn 7/10.
