Virtua Striker 2 (Sega Dreamcast, 2000)

About this product

Product Information

Virtua Striker 2 is the first soccer game to appear on the Sega Dreamcast console. It is a port of the arcade game Virtua Striker 2: Ver. 2000.1. There are four modes of play available in Virtua Striker 2: Arcade, International Cup, Variations and Match Play. While the game only supports two players at a time, with the exception of Arcade mode every mode allows each team to be controlled by a user. For example, a mode such as International Cup can be played with up to 32 people but each player can only play when it is their team's turn.

Arcade mode is a recreation of the Arcade version of the game and can be played with one or two players. Players select a team and are then placed into a tournament. This mode is over when a game ends in a loss or in a draw, or when the user defeats each opponent as they advance through the tournament.

International Cup divides the 32 teams into eight groups. A qualifying stage will then take place with each win worth three points, each draw worth one point and each loss worth nothing. At the end of the qualifying stage the top two teams from each group will advance to a tournament. After the qualifying stage players are given the option to save their progress.

Variations mode features three ways to play -- Tournament, League and Ranking. In Tournament mode, users choose either 4, 8 or 16 teams to be entered into the tournament. League mode is available for up to 32 players and standings are kept based on a team's win/loss/draw record. Ranking mode is a single game mode that displays a rank of your performance after the game.

The final mode, Match Play, includes VS Match and PK Match. VS Match is an exhibition game for one or two players. PK Match is a round of penalty kicks that is also for one or two players.

Each of the teams is represented by a country, some of which include Germany, Scotland, Brazil and Italy. However, none of the teams are statistically better than one another. Other than the team colors and home country, the only difference between the teams are their available formations.

Virtua Striker 2 supports the VGA Box, VMU and, because no analog controls are needed, an Arcade Stick.

  • Bring the arcade raging "fun" home

I had to greatly shorten this so it would get published. This game has incredible graphics and atmosphere but no replay value with the limited game modes, very little to unlock (FC Sega, Royal and MVP Genkai), and the worst controls and gameplay of all sports titles on the system. You can only use the digital pad too. Sega missed the mark by a lot. This could have been easily a contender for best soccer title of the time alongside Konami's offerings but instead it is overpriced at any price point. Skip this.
