About this product

Product Information

Summer, 1549. Two years after the death of Henry VIII, England is sliding into chaos... the economy is in collapse, inflation rages and rebellion is stirring among the peasantry. Since the old King's death, Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry's younger daughter, the Lady Elizabeth. The gruesome murder of Edith Boleyn, the wife of John Boleyn - a distant Norfolk relation of Elizabeth's mother - which could have political implications for Elizabeth, brings Shardlake and his assistant Nicholas Overton to the summer assizes at Norwich. There they are reunited with Shardlake's former assistant Jack Barak. The three find layers of mystery and danger surrounding Edith's death, as a second murder is committed. And then East Anglia explodes, as peasant rebellion breaks out across the country. The yeoman Robert Kett leads a force of thousands in overthrowing the landlords and establishing a vast camp outside Norwich. Soon the rebels have taken over the city, England's second largest. Barak throws in his lot with the rebels; Nicholas, opposed to them, becomes a prisoner in Norwich Castle; while Shardlake has to decide where his ultimate loyalties lie, as government forces in London prepare to march north and destroy the rebels. Meanwhile he discovers that the murder of Edith Boleyn may have connections reaching into both the heart of the rebel camp and of the Norfolk gentry...

  • Excellent, inspiring, always guaranteed a real good interesting read

Excellent read and always look forward to these books. The author is an excellent writer and he brings fiction alive in to reality telling the story just has it would have been during those times. Always a good read that we can look forward to!

  • Long awaited novel in the Shardlake series

The long awaited title in the Shardlake series, certainly gives you something to get your teeth into (800 plus pages). The background to the story is Kett's rebellion in Norfolk; to me, a little known part of our bloody history. An absorbing read as ever, and all the favourite characters are there, especially Jack Barak!! If I have one criticism it is that the background, ie the story of the rebellion somewhat takes over the Shardlake story. It is very detailed and I feel C J Snsom's 'history' head took over from his 'novelist's' head. Howvere, if you enjoy learning history in a painless way, this is the book for you.

  • A great read for lovers of historical novels

This is the last is the "Shardlake" series of books and it is every bit as good as the first book. If you like historical fiction based on real places and stories based around real characters of the day. and events of the day, then this is the book for you. it rivals, and I think is better than many other acclaimed writers of historical fiction. It can be read as a stand alone book, but you would enjoy it more if you have read the previous " Shardlake" books.

  • Latest and best.

Latest and Best book in the compelling series with the lovable characters from the previous books in the series. Shardlake, Barack and Tamazin are all there playing their part in this well spun and believable plot. Great historic social history with real characters among the fictitious heroes of the day. Real events and real Villeins and some believable heroes, made me want to check on the real characters and the parts they played in the real history of our country. Brilliant. One reviewer said it was too long? rubbish when I finished it I felt I had been cheated. What happens to the people who inhabited the world on the authors imagination?. What of Mousey, will Mathew and her wet nurse form a new family for the little one, how will she grow up, will she and George become friends, will Tamazin forgive Mathew and all will become friends again. And lots more. When will the next book be released? I await with bated breath.

  • excellent ! very well written series.

Historical detective stories, well researched, compelling reading. All 5 books are set in Tudor times and historically accurate in descriptions of the London of the time and the lives of the people. I had to read the next and the next after been given the first two in the Shardlake series as a Christmas present- well worth a go!

  • History brought to life

Haven't got to the end yet but fully immersed in the Kett rebellion and don't want it to end. Characters finely drawn as in all the other stories in this series. I advise however to start with the first book which is equally clever, in order to get a true taste of the age from Henry viii onwards.
