  • All good and I now have a fully working speaker again.

The surround was the correct size. I watched a youtube video before starting to do the repair but I decided that it might be better to glue the surround to the outer edge before gluing it to the cone as it would be easier to centre it that way. And it worked well - the overlap onto the paper cone is not big so if it is not correctly centred it would not work well. I'm pleased with the result and it sounds fine. I probably used only a third of the glue so next time I can just buy the surround.

  • Good fix for a blown speaker foam

I’d been looking for some secondhand factory speakers for my daughters Corsa; both front ones buzzed/vibrated, particularly during bassy tracks played at moderate volume. Having discovered this kit I removed and inspected both speakers to find the foam surrounds torn and partially detached from the paper cone. This kit allowed me to effect a good repair. I carefully removed the old foam, pulling outwards to avoid damaging the cardboard and scraped remnants from the speaker frame. In my case it was necessary to trim about 1 mm off the outer circumference of the new foam to achieve a good fit. Glue was applied to both the cone and inner edge of the foam and then both parts carefully pressed together, working with a finger below and above the cone. For extra measure I applied a fillet of glue at the front foam/cone join. After leaving the glue to set for a day (full strength is reached in 48 hrs) I gently eased back the the outer edge of the foam and applied glue to the back edge and speaker frame. When sticking down it is important that the cone voice coil is correctly positioned to maintain clearance between it and the magnet, otherwise contact will affect performance and potentially damage the voice coil. There are two methods to achieve this, either using shims which involves cutting off the voice coil dust cover or a tone generator. I chose the latter using an iPad tone generator app and a small amplifier. I applied a 50 Hz tone to the speaker and positioned the cone for minimum hum (you hear a scratchy sound if alignment is slightly out). I then pressed down in a few places and, once happy, all the way around the circumference. Finally, as before, I ran in a fillet of glue, this time between the foam outer edge and the speaker frame. After checking everything was fully adhered I left it for 48 hrs before taking it back into use. I paid £3.49 for the foam and glue kit but disappointingly note the price has increased to £5.49. Still a good option over a secondhand original speaker though, as most seem to suffer from foams that have perished over time.

  • Low price does not mean rubbish.

Searching for replacement foams for a pair of USA speakers, those listed especially for the speakers came either from the US or Australia and with postage cost six times the price of these. So took a chance on these and worked perfectly.
