Product Information
Dirk Bogarde and Tom Courtenay star in Joseph Losey's powerful and absorbing drama about an officer who is assigned to defend a private accused of desertion during World War I. Arthur Hamp is a British army private awaiting court martial for simply abandoning his post when the pressures and sights of war got too much for him during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Captain Hargreaves is initially resentful of being detailed to represent a coward but accepts it because it is his duty. However, during his interrogation of Hamp, Hargreaves elicits the reason for the private's decision to 'go for a walk', which transforms Hargreaves' indifference into a passionate belief in his 'client' and also makes him question his own attitudes towards class and the army. But little quarter was given deserters in the Great War, and the film's tragic, moving climax remains as shocking now as it was when it was first released… Also starring Leo McKern as a hidebound, unsympathetic medical officer.Product Identifiers
