Franco Zeffirelli directs this version of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy--breaking with the norm and casting a 17 (Leonard Whiting) and 15-year-old (Olivia Hussey) to play the lead roles. The filming took place in Italy, broke another tradition by having nude love scenes, has a well-known score by Nino Rota (who went on to write the music for The Godfather) and is probably still one of the most profitable film adaptations of a Shakespeare play.
I guess this version of the ultimate love story wouldn't be for everyone. I first saw it back in the mists of time whilst taking English Lit at school. It had a major effect on me then and this DVD took me right back there. The clear quality of sound and vision along with all my emotions swept me along to the heart-breaking conclusion. The title of this review says it all for me.
Brilliant film let down by a poor script in the second half.
New DVD of an excellent film. Zeferelli and the actors are top notch, Shakespeare could have tried harder with the second half perhaps as it gets a bit slow to be honest. Worth it overall for Nino Rota’s marvellous music of course.
