    Fascinating and gripping puzzle book

This this puzzle book is fascinating and gripping. It's packed full of maps, each of which has a set of questions on the facing page. The easiest questions encourage you to look at everything on the map, e.g. "how many times does the name Whitstable appear on this page", while the really difficult things challenge you to use advanced map reading skills, such as working out distances based on scale markings. Tbh I bought this as a gift for someone, so had to be careful not to damage it, whilst having a good look through. Yep, I now want a copy myself.

  • Most critical review

    Disappointing.

The maps and facts about them are interesting. The book is on good quality paper and the vast majority of the maps are very legible (although you may need your reading glasses for the small print). The problems were disappointing. I was expecting a book with problems relating to navigation and contour lines, i.e. useful map reading. Unfortunately, the majority of the questions were as follows: 1) Finding the number of occurrences of a name (e.g. "farm") on the map. The worst of these I have found so far (I'm only just over halfway through) was to find the number of times the word "da" appears on the map of Foula (Shetlands) - the answer is greater than 50. Needless to say, I didn't bother with this one - life's too short. 2) Finding a place which is an anagram of a given word or words. 3) Finding the highest number on the map. None of the above really have anything to do with map reading. The better questions are: 1) Calculating the distance between two points (this is the sort I was expecting). 2) Solving cryptic clues (those who don't do cryptic crosswords wouldn't like these!). So far, I have found nothing to do with contours. So, in summary, if you are interested in map reading, don't bother with this book. If you just want a series of problems to solve, you may like it.

  • Fun way to test your brain.

If your looking for a way to keep your brain active and have fun doing it then this puzzle book is a must. These map based puzzles are brilliant. The introduction to each map will inform and increase your knowledge of the area it covers. The puzzles themselves will test your powers of observation, anagram skills, word association and general knowledge as well as knowledge of map symbols. All in all a great workout for the brain!

  • Very good and well produced map puzzle book

Very good. Many puzzle questions with a variety of maps. Puzzles use map features such as scale, direction and symbols together with crossword type clues. It would especially appeal to someone who does not like or use Sat Nav like me!

  • All things maps

If you like all things maps, you will love this. Pages have a OS map printed on them, then a set of questions of different difficulties on the opposing page. Great fun and teaches you an awful lot about the Ordnance Survey and about map reading too.
