Comfortable mouse, good refurb quality, no Linux support

A nice mouse - replaced my old Sensei which was starting to die. Refurb quality is great, and once I got the CPI dialed in it was easy to switch. I do wish Steelseries would build client software for Linux - I am not overly amused by having to use a Windows VM just to change my color settings.

  • Most critical review

    Mouse operations

The good lots of buttons that are programmable. The scripting is nice. Some of the buttons do not work correctly, I programmed one to tx a 5 and on startup it sends an endless chain of 5's, Makes it really hard to log in to your computer. After you continuously push the button 10 - 20 times it will stop the repeats but I ended up just turning off the button. It's really hard to push some of the button - but that may just be an unavoidable problem with the mouse design. It's not really comfortable to me hard to hold.

  • Best mouse I've ever had

The Rival 500 is the best mouse I have ever used. Before this, I have used the Razer Naga and the Rival 300, and both were good, but not great. The side button placement on the Rival 500 is genius, yet so obvious it's mind-boggling that almost not a single other gaming mouse imitates this. I never understood the number pad style other mice always seem to have, because they are hard to use and not comfortable. SteelSeries has shown with this mouse that they actually understand how a thumb works, leaving a resting place in the middle of the buttons allowing easy access when one needs to be pressed. While using the layout of the buttons takes some practice, it is very easy once you get used to it, kind of like when you are first introduced to a new console controller. The Rival 500 is perfect for anyone looking for a mouse with more than 2 side buttons and sturdy build quality.

  • So close, yet so far....

Oh how I wanted to love this mouse, and replace my G502. So close yet so far. I love the idea for thumb button layout, and especially the 3 added buttons on top near the primary left/right buttons. The build quality and sensor are great. MOBA/MMO players will likely give this 5 stars. But there is a missing category for FPS players who want a few extra buttons to act with millisecond firefight timing. The 3 buttons on top would be absolutely perfect if they hadn't made them so hard to press. They purposely did this to prevent "accidental" presses, but this was an unnecessary move, because there is plenty of space to reliably avoid that. What is worse though, is that it prevents any form of rapid clicking which is necessary to maximize semi automatic blaster fire, and thus beating your opponent. The lighting effects are pretty, but don't interest me as having useful purpose. For those judging the mouse as an FPS alternative, I give it 3 stars. Last but not least is the software. It is pure awful awful awful!. They need to learn from their competition, how to vastly improve user interface, layout, and programmability. And they were too cheap to add a simple MEMORY CHIP to save profiles within the mouse (like their competition does) Look elsewhere.

  • Excellent Build Quality

Love this mouse. Took a bit of time to configure with WoW but I simply bound the mouse buttons to the keyboard number pads, then mapped those to the WoW gaming keybinds. Works great on all my characters and is very responsive. An onboard memory and I would have given it 5 stars. A braided cable should have been integrated as well. Still this is a great gaming mouse for all my games with all the buttons, bell, and whistles too.

  • Best mouse

Best mouse among the dozen or so I've ever owned. Feels great in the hand, glides smoothly, and oh so many buttons. The two buttons on top beside the left button, and the one beside the right button can be hard to push if you don't press where you're meant to. No big deal though.

  • Review of store and mouse design

This refurbished product is basically same as new. The buttons are stiff but i use them heavily enough that they will get softer. The grip i use leverages from elbow. No wrist claw lift. No weight sys to lighten load. The front thumb button takes some getting used to. I need to tilt mouse by 10 degrees for reach. My old grip for larger mouses. Feels fine after few dozens of hours playing rpgs. The left index buttons on the top left are very stiff. I use them as browsers or dpi switches. For my grip, they would be better for right side buttons. Happy i have tilt wheel binds, left side index buttons and right side ring finger buttons. Some seriously bad pro gamers if they misclicked those buttons in testing. Over design on button stiffness. Thumb buttons are fine. Scroll wheel is good for browsing, not so good for weapin switching as that easily over scrolls from minor pressure. To avoid misclick, steel series just needs to put texture on button for tactile reflex. Red dragon for fire key red has it.

  • Best of 4 mice

I like the large, well placed buttons instead of the smaller poorly place buttons on my other mice. I have two Logitech and one Razor Basilisk that I have in the drawer. They are good mice but I found the button placement awkward and too far back on the mouse to effectively use the back button in a hurry. I recommend the Steel Series 500 Rival that glides more smoothly due to larger pads and convenient easily operated buttons.

  • Suits me

Not the best Mouse but it is a very nice Mouse it's pretty big I would not recommend it for small hands the packaging wasn't that great either it was in a ziplock bag and in a USPS box... However it was in one piece seems to work nice and I'm enjoying it so far

  • Exactly the mmo mouse I was looking for.

I've been looking for a new mouse to replace my Naga Trinity, which I had double-click issues within months of use. The thumb button layout is much better then the traditional 12 button layout. Each button seems to be placed in the right position. I will say the two buttons close to the left click are a little too hard to press. But in time that will get better. The rumble feature is interesting, but I doubt I will ever use it much. If you are looking for a new MMO mouse, I highly recommend the Rival 500.
