About this product

Product Information

Award-winning actor GEORGE SEGAL ignites the screen with his star-making performance in this epic World War II drama based on the best-selling novel by SHOGUN author JAMES CLAVELL. The movie chronicles the scams of a streetwise GI held in a Japanese prison camp. Under the harrowing camp conditions, he rises to a position of power over his military and social superiors, manipulating those around him and controlling the prison's black market. Co-starring TOM COURTENAY, JAMES FOX, DENHOLM ELLIOTT and nominated for two Academy Awards (1965/Best Art Direction/Best Cinematography), KING RAT is a powerful exploration of one man's struggle to survive and flourish against all odds.

  • Sobering movie experience

King Rat...depicts many aspects of living / surviving in a less than hospitable environment. It doesn't "pull any punches"... the viewer is not spared from the various aspects of human behaviours. It may not be to everyone's taste...but it is a memorable movie. I first saw it on TV about 45yrs ago. Can't say for sure if it's ever been shown again. But it's no "Great Escape" or "Sound of Music"... ie. ...not a "f.t.a. TV network" favourite...

a case of mass manipulation for the good of everyone. It was amazing to watch the inner working of everyday life in the camp total role reversal.
