Elring Dirko HT Gasket Sealant 70ml 036.163
Elring Dirko HT Gasket Sealant 70ml 036.163
As advertised in the products listing, and confirmed via the product specifications directly on Elring.com
***For those with VW - Audi - Seat - Skoda vehicles, this sealant is the same type supplied to, sold by; and used by the OEM vehicle manufacturers when building their vehicles, the difference is the packaging and the cost, although other vehicles are of course fully compatible to***
***Make sure the surfaces are clean and grease / oil free before application or clamping tightening parts together as directed, or you will have problems; this is silicone RTV sealant it needs a clean dry grease / oil free surface to work properly***
I do recommend this product however their is a discrepancy or error with this product listing, throughout this review I have provided some blunt advise that I have picked up from many years working on motors, it is not meant to be offensive or dictatorial, but simply aimed at some things often listed online that are very misleading, or things you might be tempted to do.
The sealant is suitable for a wide range of sealing applications, always check the suitability of a sealant prior to use.
Some sealants are not designed for use and are incompatible with certain types of fluid or material sealing, and will either not work or will disolve over time resulting in a leak, potentially catastrophically.
***Despite what you see online regarding using PTFE tape to seal things like gearbox or engine oil drain plugs threads DONT use PTFE tape, it will slowly dissolve and melt owing to chemical incompatibility resulting in a serious leak***
As is the Dirko HT sealant supplied is rated for and certified for use as having very good sealing capabilities and also very good chemical resistance for use with gearboxes fluids, both synthetic and mineral based.
Asides from Elring's main specification pages, see the below resource for an indepth guide on how each Elring sealant works in specific circumstances, and with differing fluids or situations.
I cannot post the link, Ebay reviews posting compliance blocks, although kmotorshop, does a full breakdown on suitability and chemical resistance that is very easy to understand.
The ratings for suitability are listed as Good - Suitable & Not Suitable
One principal reason I personally bought the listed Dirko sealant, is that it is shown as being original Dirko sealant, I realise this seems strange; well it is advertised and shown as Dirko sealant I hear you think, however this product is not as shown the original Dirko sealant, moreover it is supplied as the newer Dirko HT formula.
So why is this potentially an issue, well according to the official specifications and with a degree of research the original Dirko sealant formula, had a significant advantage in that it is rated good for sealing threaded connections, say like a gearbox drain or fill plug threads and or a gearbox bottom selector shaft cover cap.
Whilst the original Dirko sealant does this job, and is rated for it, the newer Dirko HT formula is not listed as being suitable!!
Finding this out the hard way could be expensive and messy in the long run, only time will tell; I will update this review once I have tested over enough time, regarding thread sealing and overal performance.
A gearbox drain plug is supposed to seal itself as a result of incorporating an interference thread similar to an NPT thread, my experience however disagrees, despite following proper torque settings on installation they can and do leak more often than not, even if tightened more to stop, ***DONT severly overtighten the plugs or you might crack your gearbox or sump housings casing***
