Makes day to day life more entertaining!
This is the 4th echo dot I have set up, this latest one was a bit tricky(may be a WIFI issue) but got there in the end! My husband is now a fan and loves listening to his favourite music, classic and modern. I now use Alexa as a bedside clock radio. yet to do shopping lists, but will get there. Our WIFI is a bit iffy at times but she copes! Why pay more when the product works just the same?Verified purchase: Yes

Good product but not really needed to switch on light etc
A great little gismo that could easily make itself indispensable. However, apart from finding some obscure music tracks it was not essential to have. From, a small speaker the sound was acceptable when playing music or when communicating with you. Incidentally, when the device was in standby, it often took a long time to respond and frequently required a reboot. It could turn off and on devices with suitable receivers, so can my phone so no real advantage there unless you enjoy talking to an innate device. No doubt this device could prove useful but for a recipe I would use a Kindle, my phone or laptop. Well made and with a charcoal colour it was in unobtrusive although it used a socket as it has no internal power supply and the wireless ability negated by the fact it required plugging into a power point. A slightly higher unit to accommodate a rechargeable battery would make it more mobile and only need recharging say at night; like a phone. I would not recommend this product at present as outlined above. However, I feel certain it is a device many would find useful; although not essential.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Refurbished

Clear voice and my very own personal assistant.
Really pleased with my Echo Dot 2nd Generation, Extremely informative and a clear voice. I have the Echo beside my bed, and I love to hear the ocean sounds at night which relaxes me right down. I say good morning to Alexa when I wake up, and she says it back as well as something significance to that day, ie. an actors birthday, or what happened years ago to the day. I listen to the news and weather and lots of other things too through out the day, I just wouldn't be without it. We have an Echo dot 3rd generation downstairs too, but for my very own personal choice, I prefer my 2nd generation Echo, as the voice is more clearer on speaking, but they are both great!Verified purchase: YesCondition: Refurbished

I didn't need a good speaker as it's hooked up to my home stereo.
The echo dot is great. I use it to get answers to questions in my workflow and to play different kinds of music. I'm yet to get my home alexa enabled devices, but it will be lighting and tv/computer etc when I do. You need to teach it new skills etc by using app.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

This works even better than I'd hoped
I brought this from Ebay because Amazon Uk would not let me buy it because I live in France (we can't post to your country says Amazon) Well Ebay can and did without question. I am new to Alexa but so glad I brought it as it works far better than I expected. The only downside is that it will not recognise my region but if I phrase questions differently there is a work around. For example ' Alexa, What time is it?' answer is Uk time so rephrased 'Alexa, What time is it in France?' answer then is the correct time for me. So any local information you need just end the question with 'in France' I also managed to get Amazon Prime music to play by registering my account at my brothers address in the UK. Linux Server + X10's + Alexa
Ive Setup two dot's (one downstairs & one upstairs) to control my Linux Home server in turn It controls my aging X10 devices using small free software bundles called "ha-bridge" and "heyu" and she works EXTREMELY well doing so! Ha-bridge works with root command line so be careful what you program Alexa to do EG: "Alexa Restart Apache On" will be "#service apache2 restart" If your a Treky you can change "Alexa" to "Computer" No need to change your old X10's ....which if you have an X10 automatic home already you only need "ha-bridge & Heyu" I Have The Power!Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

New technology
I think this tech is good but may be a little too immature at the moment. There have been several instances where what should be simple tasks cannot be carried out by Alexa as the capability hasn't been developed yet. Saying that if something is suggested (emailed) to the Development Team they do get back with a response and have confirmed they will put the suggestion forward for development.
