The 2nd generation Amazon Echo Dot smart assistant is the scaled-down version of their larger Echo system. This second generation model launched in 2016 to build upon the success of the original Echo Dot and came with a couple of new features as well as a black color option. When used as a smart speaker, the Echo Dot can link to a smart device using Bluetooth. If you want a bigger sound than this miniature device can offer, you can also link it to external speakers using the same Bluetooth connection or a 3.5 millimeter audio jack. The Echo Dot is a lot more than just a wireless speaker, though. It is also a hub for Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant. When the Echo Dot’s microphone array picks up Alexa’s wake word, she comes online to give you the news or weather updates, turn on a music streaming service, or even tell you a joke. The Echo Dot can also be linked to apps and used as a hub for a wide range of other smart home devices. My Echo
Very neat.. Sound quality is better than I expected. It sometimes has a hard time hearing you when music is playing.. even low.. YOU FIND YOURSELF YELLING AT IT.. echo, shut up.. ECho, SHUtup... ECHO SHUT.. THE HELL UPPPP... It links nicely to your Spotify account, and your smart phone. So you can tell Echo, put potatoes on my shopping list, or get gasoline for the mower on to do list.. and its done. just look at your phone app. and away you go. It doesn't erase things off your list, you have to do that manually on the app, or on your computer. It can also read your list to you, or e-books that you purchase from amazon. plays radio stations as well, just ask it to play your favorite station by name, or play 60,s music etc. Nice gadget. The only real downside is, you cant set it up as a Canadian resident, pick an American place near you,so if you ask it the weather, you need to be specific, like Echo what is the temperature in Toronto Canada, instead of echo, what is the temperature? worth the 100 dollars just for the novelty, and was delivered in 1 week.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Great Product but sure not a plug and play.
I ordered this Alexa ( Echo Dot)because my daughter gave my wife one and it was preprogramed and works like a charm. I decided we needed another one and I ordered it not knowing I had to link it or program it or that it would not work with my desktop iMac until I went to Amazon and discovered how really ignorant an 80 year old can be. I then headed to you tube to try to learn what to do.....impossible with what I have to work with. So if you are not real computer literate and don't have a smart phone, forget it.; unless you have someone with a smart phone and a whole lot more savvy than I do, save your money or buy one preprogrammed. In summary, the Echo Dot is a wonderful invention to use, it is well designed, has great sound, is inexpensive, and fun to have around - but if you are my age, make sure you have a grand child or someone who can set it up for you as it dang sure is not easy to get "up and going" as the advertisements would lead you to believe.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Good Value especially used - Try to get 3rd generation if using for music or in a big room
The 2nd generation Echo Dot is a great device and good value, especially if you find one refurbished; the one I got was supposedly a refurb but looked to be new or at least open box when I got it. The only thing that makes it somewhat obsolete is the existence of the newer 3rd generation Echo Dot, which has better microphones and MUCH better sound from the speakers. If you listen to music a lot on your Dot, I highly recommend ponying up for the 3rd generation Dot. If you don’t use it for music or not a lot, then the 2nd generation is good enough and a much better value. I have mine in a smaller bathroom where it does well; for larger rooms, it can be hard to hear, the microphones don’t pick up voices as well, and it doesn’t work too well for music listening. The bass is lacking and overall sound definition is muddy even if you try adjusting the settings in the Alexa app, especially at higher volumes.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Refurbished

I love it because you could ask what time or the date. You could also listen to music or your favorite radio station as long as they do a live stream on the internet. You could also set up reminders and more. Their adding more each day. Its easy to use. It takes a little time to set up. AMAZING GADGET
I love my Echo Dot (2nd Generation). Have had it for several weeks now and I am amazed at the things that it can do. I really like being able to ask to hear a specific song and Alexa plays it for me. It has a stand alone speaker that is pretty good for it's size but I chose to augment with a larger speaker set. You can set it up quickly and be talking to Alexa in no time. Phone app is easy to download and free of charge. You do have to have internet and a cell phone. Internet speed is critical for streaming music. Recommended. I am thinking of getting a second one for my bedroom as you can select easy listening music to listen to as you get ready to sleep and it even plays sounds for a soothing effect after a hard day at work. Alexea & Vera Plus
BEST thing to happen since Z-Wave! I love it and now have 5 of them throughout my house and plan to get a couple more. They are the greatest and easiest things to run and play with. Unlike other devices [like Ivee] which were expensive dismal failures to the extreme and very poor company backing. And other products that you spend hours training and learning, the Alexea is super easy and never once has she or any of them started up talking or reacting unless you say the key word first. It's great to have a house 99% computer controlled as well as the money it saves me, it all pays for itself. It's Fun
I purchased this one as a gift, but I've had one of my own for quite some time. It can be quite useful - for me, primarily for making lists and controlling lights and appliances. However, it can also be quite entertaining if you take the time to program it. They continue to add additional skills - both for practicality and entertainment. It can take a while for it to learn speech patterns, particularly for those with an accent or speech impediment. That learning period can also be quite amusing.
