John Irving won an Oscar for this moving, thoughtful drama, an adaptation of his own novel, starring Tobey Maguire and Michael Caine (who also picked up a statue). Maguire plays Homer Wells, an orphan mentored by Dr Wilbur Larch. Larch runs the orphanage Homer grew up in, but Homer baulks at his sideline in illegal abortions. And after young couple Candy and Wally come to Larch for a termination, Homer returns home with them. After Wally is posted overseas on war duty, Homer and Candy become closer at the cider house where they work; but news of a fellow worker's pregnancy leads Homer to re-examine his principles.
