Workstation-performance in a mainstream desktop CPU.
The 3900x in my opinion hits a price-performance sweet spot. ~20% more than expensive than comparable mainstream 8 core cpus like 3800x, but offering 50% more threads. If you do any CPU intensive work (like video editing, pro audio, coding/compiling), that extra horsepower means you can get more done faster. In my case I run a digital audio workstation, and extra cores gives me more tracks and more potential soft-synth voices. If you're a pure gamer, its not for you; other than installing games faster, compressing/decompressing files, you don't see much benefit from the excess threads. Maybe in the future that will be different, but at the moment 6-8 cores will do you fine. But i like the extra power for both multi-tasking as well as creative work.
