Not a gimmick, but a "must have". Greatly simplifies alignment with the cut line.
I would recommend this to anyone with the compatible miter saw. Hard to believe there's no cryptic alignment required, just attach and go. Only 4 stars because in direct, bright sunlight, the shadow line is not visible. However, just a little shade, and it's easily visible. I love how simple it is and how well it works. I found that before making the final cut, it works best to start the saw and lower the blade close to the material to be cut to focus the edge of the shadow line on the cut mark. Excellent Work Light and Blade Alignment System
I purchased one of these months ago to put on my DeWalt DW718 compound miter saw. It is working great and is much better than the cumbersome laser alignment system. Since these are no longer available in the USA I decided to buy a backup. I was lucky enough to find one from the USA. This purchase is the backup to my original purchase. The LED that could.
Finally deciding to stick a guide onto the dw717xe, I stumbled across this LED system as an alternative to the laser guide. Whilst it requires a tiny bit of fiddling to install (just to keep wires clear during installation) the end result is a simple and accurate system. The LED provides a good amount of white light over your work area but the best part is how it casts a shadow over your saw blade. The result of this is an accurate guide line that matches the kerf of your blade onto your work piece. If accuracy is your thing (which it probably is if you are using one of these DeWalt saws in the first place) this is the system to get. Makes cutting even better as the area is lit up in a bright LED. I have heard Dewalt stoped offering this feature on their saws, big mistake. The shadow line works great, and I no longer need to place my pencil mark where my blade will first contact the board.

Led work light
This is a great product. Led light is way better than the laser in my opinion. I still use my eye on the blade, but small pencil marks are lit up to see rather than counting on and redialing in the laser to perfection.
