About this product

Product Information

'Truthful, modern and real' - Stylist magazine 'Hilarious, sharp, spitfire writing' - Sacha Z. Scoblic, Senior Editor at The Atlantic and author of UNWASTED: MY LUSH SOBRIETY Ever sworn off alcohol for a month and found yourself drinking by the 7th? Think there's 'no point' in just one drink? Welcome! There are millions of us. 64% of Brits want to drink less. Catherine Gray was stuck in a hellish whirligig of Drink, Make horrible decisions, Hangover, Repeat. She had her fair share of 'drunk tank' jail cells and topless-in-a-hot-tub misadventures. But this book goes beyond the binges and blackouts to deep-dive into uncharted territory: What happens after you quit drinking? This gripping, heart-breaking and witty book takes us down the rabbit-hole of an alternative reality. A life with zero hangovers, through sober weddings, sex, Christmases and breakups. In THE UNEXPECTED JOY OF BEING SOBER, Catherine Gray shines a light on society's drink-pushing and talks to top neuroscientists and psychologists about why we drink, delving into the science behind what it does to our brains and bodies. Much more than a tale from the netherworld of addicted drinking, this book is about the escape, and why a sober life can be more intoxicating than you ever imagined. Whether you're a hopelessly devoted drinker, merely sober-curious, or you've already ditched the drink, you will love this book. 'A riveting, raw, yet humorous memoir with actionable advice. A truly unique blend of storytelling and science that holds a universe of hope.' - Annie Grace, author of THIS NAKED MIND 'This book is a gamechanger. Everyone deserves to have Catherine hold their hand as they navigate the new world of not drinking - whether exploring alcohol-free periods or going for full-on sobriety - and this book enables just that. Wise, funny & so relatable.' - Laurie, Girl and Tonic blogger

    Fantastic book

This was a 'used' copy but in good condition. I was more than happy with the physical look of this second hand book. It was packaged well and arrived on time. In terms of content, I have yet to finish the book but from what I've read so far I've found it inspirational, compelling, positive and a fantastic approach to the subject. I've read quite a lot of books around this matter and this one stands out amongst the best. I was tired and weary of reading books about excessive behaviour and addiction, that were downbeat, depressing and preachy. I applaud the author and would recommend it to anyone who indeed, would like to see and hear the sunshine of sobriety.

Starting to address a difficult addiction.

This is a good book, written from direct experience. It gives good techniques to deal with situations and provides vital understanding for a supporting family. It's a very open an honest account of a difficult addiction and how to begin to overcome it. Thanks.

  • Excellent, inspiring.

This is an excellent self help book for those who are considering the increasing trend to be alcohol free. Like all the best self help books, it is written with the passion of someone who has been there, but as well backed up with current thinking. The author, a journo who has (amongst other things in her glittering career) written for "Cosmo" and "Glamour" magazine, and thiis shows in her style of writing. It is interesting how she has identified our culture as one where. non drinkers are considered "boring". Well worth a read, and definately of interest to clinicians.

  • Life changing!!

Wow! Now I love(d) drinking, but my mind completely shifted while reading this book. Maybe it’s a coincidence, maybe it was time, maybe I bought the book as subconsciously I wanted to stop, but my oh my, while reading the book, without even thinking about it, I cut down, and just before the end of the book I stopped drinking completely, none of this was intentional or planned. Honestly, it’s so weird, and I haven’t even thought about having a drink since finishing the book. Love it!!!

Really interesting book. Both a personal account of 1 woman’s story and also a look at how alcohol and drinking culture is rooted in our culture.
