One of the Best for high ISO work
As expected, the A9 is a very capable professional camera. I bought it for its low-noise, high ISO performance, mainly to cover concert venues, rodeo, basketball, roller derby and polo. I use it with the 24-70/2.8, 80-200/2.8, and also the 24-240 and 100-400 Sony lenses. You can set your shutter speed as appropriate for the action and let the ISO run as high as ISO 32,000 with excellent results. The noise is remarkably low and can be handled in post. The A9 focusing is great in low light and focus tracking is also very effective. The electronic shutter is very fast and silent, the mechanical shutter is not loud with no mirror slap, and the buffer is big enough for high-speed shooting. The EVF requires a bit of start-up time, so it's not as quick to fire up (as a Nikon D5) to catch unexpected action. But battery life is good enough that you can leave it turned on. The built-in stabilization is the other reason (besides high ISO) I like it, for legacy lenses and a higher percentage of keepers in general. The body is a bit small, but a grip extension takes care of that. The finish chips easily and the side door is not waterproof. Overall, a great package.
