About this product

Product Information

The bestselling bard of Britain on that great institution we all love- the railway station The Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller It is the scene for our hopeful beginnings and our intended ends, and the timeless experiences of coming and going, meeting, greeting and parting. It is an institution with its own rituals and priests, and a long-neglected aspect of Britain's architecture. And yet so little do we look at the railway station. Simon Jenkins has travelled the length and breadth of Great Britain, from Waterloo to Wemyss Bay, Betws-y-Coed to Beverley, to select his hundred best. Blending his usual insight and authority with his personal reflections and experiences - including his founding the Railway Heritage Trust - the foremost expert on our national heritage deftly reveals the history, geography, design and significance of each of these glories. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs throughout, this joyous exploration of our social history shows the station's role in the national imagination; champions the engineers, architects and rival companies that made them possible; and tells the story behind the triumphs and follies of these very British creations. These are the marvellous, often undersung places that link our nation, celebrated like never before.

  • Beautifl buildings, well presented.

Beautifully illustrated. I bought this book having seen some of Simon Jenkins works on Churches and Cathedrals. In a sense these are the modern equivalents temple to transport at a time when mney was invested heavily into the new communication links around the country. just for sheer exploration of designs these are many and various little country stations to the great halls of devotion to travel. well worth the small investment for any one interested in local history and transport, as well as the sheer beauty of the buildings.

  • Definitely more than a coffee table picture book and well worth a read.

SimonJenkins gets under the skin of our railway heritage and int eh stations he selects in his top 100, shows us some of the features we simply overlook in our daily travels through them. It particularly appreciates the modern architecture with great examples such as Surbiton and Canary Wharf. My favourite is the restoration of King's Cross.

  • Disapointing.

It's for a present so haven't read it as such, just flicked through it. I bought it because I thought looking at the front cover it would be full of beautiful pictures of Railways stations but it isn't.

  • Good Factual History of the Railways since 1830
