About this product

Product Information

The New York Times number one bestselling title Bravery, courage, fear and love in a time of war. Despite their differences, sisters Viann and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight and Viann finds herself isolated so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her. As the war progresses, the sisters' relationship and strength is tested. With life changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions. Vivid and exquisite in its illumination of a time and place that was filled with atrocities, but also humanity and strength, Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale will provoke thought and discussion that will have readers talking long after they finish reading.

    Good story

The book was as good as new and arrived in very good time for our book club. The book itself was an interesting read, despite an overly flowery style of the author. I wouldn't read any further books by this author as I think this subject is better covered in All the Light I cannot see by Anthony Doerr. That said, it still made me cry at the end.

  • Most critical review

    Nothing to say on this.

Really irritated by he way the odd french word was introduced into the english narrative. For heavens sake: the characters are talking french rendered into english by the author, theoretically, so why the "Maman" etc? Couldn't bring myself to finish the book, it was so annoying!

  • A most compelling and humbling story

Kristin Hannah is an excellent author. This is the first book I have read of hers. I am part of a book club and it was recommended by one of the members. Kristin,s knowledge and research is amazing. I'm half way through the book now but I can't honestly say that I am enjoying it. Although beautifully written I'm afraid I do not like the content. I've always steered away from anything to do with the war. Saying that I feel compelled to finish it. It is upsetting and heartbreaking to read about the German atrocities and what innocent people were subjected to. We need stories like this so that all the brave people who saved thousands of lives are never forgotten.

  • Emotional read that kept me gripped

Really good read that kept me interested from the beginning. I thought the characters were well described and I either loved or hated them. The story moved well through the years and by the end I didn’t want the book to finish

  • Compelling

One of those books you just don't want to put down. A harrowing but compelling story beautifully told and cleverly written. A story of two sisters in WW2 you just won't forget. I'm looking forward to the film.
