An amazing piece of glass... if a bit heavy
I’ve been a commercial shooter for about 15 years, and have been a big fan of all the “new” era Sigma lenses. I own 3 other primes, but the reviews about the zooms had me cautious. I have shot the Canon 24-70 (both versions) as well as the 24-105 f/4. The Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 Art OS lens is remarkable. On my 5Ds it had incredibly accurate focus points, and I love how the contrast and color renditions give it a very different feel than the army of Canon lenses. (More neutral color, slightly more contrasts)
Cons: it is heavy. Like, 85mm f/1.2 heavy. I definitely feel the difference in my shoulders and back after a day of shooting. The zoom ring is firm, which in the long term for the lens is probably better, but it takes some getting used to. The focus ring is thin, and it’s still taking me some hunting to find it while shooting.
I’ve managed camera stores, run rental departments, and shot nearly every lens and body in the Canon lineup. This is a remarkbable lens that exceeds expectation, and is at least an equal to any other lens in this zoom range. I don’t get the negativity exhibited in so many of the reviews I had read.
(Included the only image I have really shot that wasn’t for a client so far...)
