Their words and feelings?. A whole world is hidden from us. Their war remains unknown. I want to write the history of that war. After completing the manuscript in 1983, Alexievich was not allowed to publish it because it went against the state-sanctioned history of the war.

About this product

Product Information

The unforgettable oral history of Soviet women's experiences in the Second World War from the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature Bringing together dozens of voices in her distinctive style, The Unwomanly Face of War is Svetlana Alexievich's collection of stories from Soviet women who lived through the Second World War- on the front lines, on the home front and in occupied territories. As Alexievich gives voice to women who are absent from official narratives - captains, sergeants, nurses, snipers and pilots - she shows us a new version of the war we're so familiar with, creating an extraordinary alternative history from their private stories. Published in 1985 in Russia and now available in English for the first time, The Unwomanly Face of War was Alexievich's first book and a huge bestseller in the Soviet Union, establishing her as a brilliantly revolutionary writer.

  • Don't be put off by the clunky title - this is a really important book

The book records the previously untold experiences of soviet women during the second world war, who volunteered for active service in their thousands. The author collected accounts of women's personal experiences concentrating on how it felt to be there at the time rather than the official versions of the war, which were based on men's accounts. The result is a very powerful, must-read book, which will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride as you read. It puts our cozy 21 century lives into perspective!

  • Gripping and informative

For those interested in the Great Patriotic War, women at war and their roles in the Soviet Union this is a must read. Shocking, provocative, and also everyday events endured by the best people in the world. It has much relevance for today's views of feminism, humanity and combat.
