Be sure you know the difference between science and pseudoscience

Having been impressed with Michael Mosley's apparent scientific approach on TV, I was optimistic that this would be the book to choose on what appears to be a promising new area of medicine. However, as I got further into the book suspicions grew that there might be an amount of pseudoscience mixed in with the science. Even when studies were quoted, I started to feel that I would have to do too much research into their reliability to know whether I was receiving sound, evidence based advice. I began to wonder if all the text had been written by Dr Mosley, himself, and about how much (if any) had been ghost written. Too many of the recommendations seemed to promote the industry which has grown up around this field of medicine without there being sufficient science to justify it, like the sale of triphala, an Ayurvedic herbal treatment. This was prescribed by 'nutritional therapist' Tanya Borowski, but more of her later. Dr Mosley's apparent enthusiasm for one particular organisation involved in microbiome research, The Weizmann Institute, also raised suspicions, especially when it was revealed that they had 'created a company to commercialise their work'. Once I reached the recipe section, which definitely wasn't written by Dr Mosley but by nutritional therapist, Tanya Borowski, and GP, Claire Bailey, I really did lose confidence in its recommendations. It felt over-keen on trendy, middle class foods and 'superfoods' like nut based milks, chia seeds and the unspecified cocktail of inorganic chemicals known as (natural) sea salt, not to mention the implication that however bad something is, it's OK if it's organic. Yes, there was excellent stuff in the book. But I couldn't be sure which bits.

The clever guts diet gives the latest medical research into how our stomach works. It includes the various functions how the gut breaks down and absorbs food, the importance the gut as a bacterial biome or ecosystem, the various types of gut flora and what they do, what you can do to encourage them and what negatively affects them eg antibiotics. Amazing facts .....The role of the appendix .....did you know it still works and recharges our gut flora and is not just a hang over from mesolithic hunter-gatherer days, that our stomach actually has a brain ....yes a brain ! That drinking alcohol in small quantities is actually better for your stomach than being teetotal ? That fasting occasionally as our ancestors would have had to do is actually beneficial to our gut. Gut Problems and how to relieve them from IBS, obesity, lethargy, diabetes, colitis, coeliac disease, food intolerance and allergies, leaky gut syndrome, bloating, reflux. • A Very Interesting and Useful Book

Helped me define my bloating and other problems and take the correct action with my diet to correct it. Using just some of the recipes in the book has altered many of my eating habits. I have also lost a few pounds in weight since buying the book on 15th June.

  • Great book

At last a diet that agrees with me. It includes a small bit of dark, 80% chocolate, some red wine once or twice a week, eggs, nuts, whole-grains, oily fish, chicken and loads of of live yogurt and cheese. No weighing, measuring or counting calories, carbs or fat. I'm eating more vegetables and fruit. Not at all tempted by sugary stuff or milk chocolate, my usual addiction. I don't feel deprived or even as if I'm 'dieting'. I daren't hit the scales yet, I'll wait till if my jeans go slack. Busy cultivating my Gut Flora. I don't expect miracles but am feeling more energetic and fitter than I have in years. This is for a better life. Any weight loss would be a bonus. Michael Mosley, THANK YOU.
