Immediate, gripping, fast moving and very relevent to today.
The Hate U Give spells "THUG" - obvious when you see the spine. Thug is one of the stereotype names applied by outsiders to people they perceive to live in "ghetto" districts, Star and her family still live in a "poor" / "black" area but she and her brothers go to a white school in a neighbouring area - which creates both context and contrast. Star effectively lives in two worlds (which are very well distinguished). Events force her to come to terms with her life. This is a really excellent book for today. A "must read" more than of the order of "Lord of the Flies". It should be on the National Curriculum. I suppose that it could be called a modern/current "To Kill a Mocking Bird" - except that it is far, far better than that. This must be a good book - I have immediately bought another eight copies for friends - on E Bay of course :-)
