Product Information

Genly Ai is an ethlogist observing the people of the planet Gethen, a world perpetually in winter. The people there are androgyus, rmally neuter, but they can become male ot female at the peak of their sexual cycle. They seem to Genly Ai alien, unsophisticated and confusing. • Great read

Thought provoking. I have not read much 'sci-fi' but this confounded my expectations. Once I had got past the strange names, dates etc, and focused on plot and character it became easier. I really enjoyed the story, which follows an outsider trying to understand another culture whilst undertaking a diplomatic mission, and becoming embroiled in political conflict. There is wonderful writing about the hostile scenery and environment which made it all seem very real. The plot explores themes of otherness, gender, friendship and trust. I enjoyed reading it very much.
