Abreva is only ointment on the market that really works on a cold sore. Don't let the small size of tube fool you. You only need a little ointment for each treatment, and the tube will take care of quite of few cold sores when they pop up. If you put it on right in the beginning, 3 times a day like the directions say, then, its gone in a week. I use to get really bad cold sores that lasted weeks and looked like open wounds. With this, the cold sore never gets a chance to form and you really can't even see it during treatment if you get it early.
