Northern Ireland drama based on the true story of hunger striker Bobby Sands and two mothers whose lives are unavoidably affected by his stance. Bobby Sands (John Lynch), jailed for terrorist-related offences, embarks on his hunger strike in an effort to force the Thatcher Government to treat him and his fellow inmates as political prisoners. Joining him in his struggle are the sons of Kathleen Quigley (Helen Mirren) and Annie Higgins (Fionnula Flanagan), women from totally different backgrounds who are forced into an uneasy alliance with one another in order to cope with the public and private ordeals which are about to befall them.
