What Paul Weller was always meant to sound like
This extensive live set from the evergreen Paul Weller features 25 songs across two CDs, plus a DVD of the same 25 songs. Eleven of the songs are from the recent True Meanings album, which reached No.2. The remainder are drawn from the artist's long career, spanning almost 40 years from “Private Hell” from the Jam’s 1979 Setting Sons album. Re-workings of from The Style Council and The Jam are seamlessly interwoven with solo works ranging debut album Paul Weller (1992) to the eleven tracks from 2018’s True Meanings. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the focus on early works and the most recent albums, with only a couple of tracks from 22 Dreams representing the period between Stanley Road’s ‘You Do Something to Me’ (1995) and ‘Long Long Road’ from 2017’s A Kind Revolution. Whilst True Meanings featured orchestration, many of the other selections didn’t when originally recorded. Adding orchestral arrangements does not always work well. So, does it work here? The answer is a resounding ‘YES.’ A crystal-clear sound and technically accomplished production add to excellent songs played by a great performer. If you like Paul Weller, you will love this. If you are not sure, buy it and be convinced. I suspect this is what Paul Weller was always meant to sound like; certainly, he has never sounded better.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
