Nice CB for the money.
I got out of CB 30 years ago because I got sick of all the loudmouth high powered skip shooters cluttering up the band. Echo chambers, tweety birds and all those other childish sound effects didn't help either.
I re-entered CB radio about two years ago specifically so I could get road conditions from the few intelligent truckers that use the two interstates that pass within 4 miles of my home. I'm a ham radio operator and when I get reports of dangerous road conditions ,I pass that information along on the local repeaters.
Until recently, I was using my old GE 3-5811 CB from the 1980's. Not a bad little radio but ancient solid state electronics. Wanting to upgrade, I purchased one of these Galaxy DX 949's for my shack and I'm very pleased with it being straight out of the box with no tuning, alignment or modifications.
Hooked it up to a really good antenna (Hy-Gain SPT-500) tuned to perform within the 10 and 12 meter band, I was able to set the SWR down to 1.3 to 1 with an antenna tuner The output on AM was 4 watts and in SSB 11 watts PEP on CH-19. Not too shabby for barefoot operation.
Considering my antenna is temporarily only 28 feet off the ground, I'm getting about 8 miles range on a day without skip. When I get it on the tower I'm putting up this summer, it ought to do much better. No big deal because I have no plans to work skip on 11 meters. I have 20 and 40 meters for that! I also made a few contacts on SSB on CH-36-40.
The setup is simple, controls are easy to figure out and provides excellent audio with even the factory microphone. I use external speakers with all my ham equipment so the audio is always in my face. This is no exception. IMO, this is a a great radio for both mobile and base use. There are MANY choices out there and some requiring a much larger investment. But for under two hundred bucks if you want sideband capabilities, this is a good choice. I really can't see any cons with this radio as it's doing what can be expected.
