Wondered why this was 2x the price of the z27x G2, now I know.
I bought both the Z31x and Z27x G2 monitors to compare side by side; both are very good out of the box.
Thought the Z27x G2 was a pretty good value, though it has the usual minor IPS annoyances. A little bit of dark blue off-angle glow, only 'OK contrast that's good for IPS but mediocre for TN/PVA contrast, etc. It's a good, solid color-corrected IPS monitor with standalone calibration for an Eizo-killing price. Very nice. I'm not disappointed in the Z27x G2, but not super-amazed.
Then I unboxed and set up the Z31x, expecting to be disappointed at the same performance with 4 extra inches at twice the price. Nope.
The panel in the Z31x is much nicer. No IPS glow whatsoever. None. Hard to believe it's IPS the black is so stable off-axis. And it's visibly much higher contrast than the Z27x G2. At twice the price, it's every bit a steal.
If these monitors are durable, and they'd better get at least 10 years of flawless performance, they might be the best panels I've bought. This is where HP has screwed up in the past (the color cal goes haywire over time). I'm gonna guess these are so inexpensive because no one trusts HP DreamColor for long-term durability anymore. HP says they fixed it. We'll see. If they do hold up, they'll be legendary.
Fit and finish are flawless. Very counter-trend chonky sort of look, but handsome and serious. No issues out of box, no iffy pixels, no backlight bleed, no hiccups.
