    Good but gimmiky

The table improves upon the original design of about 30 years ago. However, it remains a tool for light to medium, home-owner type projects. I use it as a table, as a light-duty vise as well as to weigh down my garage floor :) Gimmiky: because changing configurations to adapt to different applications requires a bit of trial and error unless one has a superb memory as to 'which of the three table-top components goes where'. That is, re-positioning the boards is not intuitive. Designers could have embellished icons or pictures as quick tip-offs. To resolve the quandary, I have done the following: 1. Identified the boards as A, B, C. then, 2. Stuck labels on the side with brief tips cross-referenced to board names. A $30 labelling machine (P-Touch by Brother) was used to produce the self-stick, tiny labels. Saves me time. Since accompanying instructions were useless, I followed pictures on the factory carton to figure things out. I might add that, for a few more bucks, there are better designs available.

    Reality check

This is definitely for the amateur that doesn't count on your projects to be of any significant amount other than dribble. If you want a good table..design and build one. Not of cheap materials and made in china. If you plan on starting something and never finishing it...this would be a great table for you. Upon further reflection. ...how can a working table for hammering on or bending or cutting on be strong enough when the metal frame is as thick as a spoon or fork? The wood is laminate. It seems to me that someone decided to take a good design from the 60's and over the years try and save any penny possible so now you have this. How many people need to store their table on a wall ? Are you serious ? Truly better to go and buy a few 2x4"s...some 4x4 posts...some nails or long bolts...and for $30 you could have a table that you can give your son or grandkids. This table doesn't have a lifespan of 15 years and that is only to rest a few paint cans or a potted plant. For the money you saved. You can buy a nice miter saw and drill and build a quality product. Not to say how happy you will always be to know you made it.

  • Perfect for my needs

I work in small engine repair and I needed a portable table that could grip a string trimmer while servicing and providing a working surface for tools and such. This table fits my needs although I wish the table had a stronger vice...The vice feels a little flimsy but it works and hasn't let me down yet. Overall, I love this table and would recommend it for small engine repair. I originally got this table to use as an engine stand for rebuilding...haven't used it for that purpose yet but I'm sure it can handle it.

  • My new 425 Workmate workbench

I can understand some of the reviews that I read prior to purchasing the Workmate better now. The bench is very good but the assembly instructions were hard to follow and somewhat a pain in the butt. It was hard to get the pins into the handles but I managed with the use of some other tools. The construction seems fine and when I used it I was pleased with the way it worked. It made the job that I was doing much easier than without this bench. Tell Black and Decker to rewrite the instruction manual and you will have an excellent workbench and experience on your hands.

  • It is a decent worktable, and so far very useful in holding my wooden pieces stable.

This is my second Workmate, my first was purchased over 40 years ago and is still going strong, but being used for my Makita Power Mitre saw, this is not of the same great quality as the first one but is of a decent, purpose, and being very useful in my wood working shop. The instructions are extremely poorly written when trying to assemble, and thank the Good Lord for "you tube". With the proper instructions it should have taken 20-30 minutes to assemble, but instead it came to about 2.5 hours. Incidentally the first one was already assembled when purchased, if I remember right. The only reason I only gave it 4 stars is because of the cable that operates the tabletop is made of some type of nylon plastic line, where my other, is a worm gear. I doubt seriously that the new cable will hold up as long.

  • heavy with no real handle

The unit is heavy and ill balanced when closed to store. When assembling the white belt doesn't allow for adjustments so as to align both sides to move as one. Without that feature working correctly the unit is just another low work area. I thought it was to be a better buy and of more use then it turned out to be. Had I purchased it at a store I'd have returned it the same day. I wish it was more of a useful piece then I find it to be.

  • Lightweight and compact

The Black & Decker WM425 is very nice, it has two height adjustments. It can hold 550 lbs. and many different size projects.I always wanted one and i'm glad it was a good purchase.

  • Black & Decker Workmate

Bought my first Workmate 40 years ago and still have it. My son loves it so much I bought him one. Hopefully he’ll have as many years of use with his. Outstanding product; quick delivery.

  • Not like the good ole days!!!~

No where as good as my 2 older ones! Top is only 1/2" thick, older ones were 1"+. Sections don't line up flat, it doesn't appear it will work too well with someone who is looking for it to be a real 'work' table. It is ok for what I'm using it for but if you are looking for a work horse it really isn't the table for you.

  • Home owner quality only. Not suitable for a contractor

Very confusing direction on how to assemble this unit. Once assembled it was very fussy to unfold and fold. The release mechanism is pretty weak and clamping force on the vertical vice is not very strong. For a contractor like me this would get some serious abuse and probably be non functional in a matter of weeks.
