Incredibly Beautiful Illustrations
This is an oversized alphabet book, on one hand, and a glorious nature study on the other. The illustrations are compelling and allow readers -of all ages- to get lost in the details while reading the thoughtful & descriptive verse in which each line begins with the first letter of the subject. A transition page also allows young readers to find the gold letters of the subject in a double-paged illustration. I like that it draws attention to common plants, such as dandelion and brambles, and many woodland animals and birds. A wonderful, magical book!
Words like acorn, dandelion, willow, lark, otter, kingfisher, bluebell, fern were recently removed from the junior Oxford dictionary and replaced with words like broadband, chatroom, and such. In response Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Norris created this gorgeous spellbook to return these lost words to children. We only love those things for which we have names and it's vitally important that we not lose the words that connect us to the natural world. Do a search on the internet for the fascinating story behind this book. It has received rave reviews and a grasssroots funding campaign has placed a copy in every library in Scotland. It's that compelling and beautiful. It is a book for adults to share with children, to read the spells aloud, to get lost in the beauty of the illustrations. Give a copy to your local library.
