Shimano- it's fine, but you shouldn't need it

It's fine, but you shouldn't need it- I was more than a little irritated to find I needed this shim to be able to use the posh Park tool I already had on my fancy new Ultegra BB. The shim itself is fine- it's plastic being used between 2 metal parts, so it's going to get chewed up, but then I guess it would cost more if it was metal and it does what it says on the tin-the real irritation is that is needed at all.

    Made from chocolate

I bought this item thinking this would be okay to convert my standard bottom bracket tool into one that I could use to remove my 6800. How wrong I was. This thing might as well be made from chocolate as it disintegrated the first time I used it. I suppose I should have known better than to put some soft plastic between two pieces of metal and expect it to work okay. I thought the quality, from a name like Shimano, would be good enough to do the job, oh no. If you need to remove a smaller than standard bottom bracket, like the 6800, then but the correct tool for the job. Buying this is a false economy

  • If you need it, then you need it.

You'll need this tool to install certain bottom brackets. It's the only option I know of that's suitable for SM-BBR60 and BB-MT800 bottom brackets. It does the job but it's a plastic adapter that goes between a metal tool and a metal bottom bracket so you have to treat it with care. But it's not like there's an alternative for the bottom brackets its designed for. Note however that this adapter will come with retail packaged bottom brackets. You'll only need to get one separately if you've got an OEM bottom bracket. E.g. if your bike came with BB-MT800 that you need to remove, or you've bought your bottom bracket from an online retailer that sells OEM parts.

  • Does the job... just

As far as I'm aware, this is the only way to get new style 105 or Ultegra BB's on or off. The adaptor just slots into a BB tool and then over the BB itself. Sadly the adaptor is pretty weak and it's very easy to strip the threads on it. Just waiting for someone to make a proper tool to deal with these BB's.

  • Plastic adapter for a high torque bottom bracket?

Absolutely no way you can get the required 40Nm of torque with this plastic adapter. I have no idea why shimano manufacture it. You will shred it on 1st use no question.. If you don't then you'll have a BB that is not tight enough

  • Not strong enough

Adapter is made of plastic and broke when only applying a moderate amount of force whilst trying to remove bottom bracket. May work better in a full circular tool rather than the partially open tool I was using but I ended up buying the proper tool for the job.......shimano TL-FC37.

  • Simple but works

Had my doubts if this little bit of plastic would be man enough for the job. But paired with the Park or Shimano BB tool it grips the BB collar firmly and allows easy removal and fitting.

  • Its an adaptor. It fits.

If you need a FC25 BB adaptor for the smaller size Hollowtech 2 BB's, this is indeed that product. Unsurprisingly, it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Uncomplicated and functional.

  • Good product

I've seen criticism of this item re the material it's made of. I had absolutely no problem - it successfully removed 2, very tight, bearings & re-fitted 4 without any indication of damage when used with a Park tool. If people are experiencing failure maybe it's poor use ;-) If you're changing bottom brackets on an industrial scale maybe an industrial steel tool would be better :-)

  • works better than expected!

It is the correct tool for the job but I was dubious of it being plastic. It actually felt very positive in use while torquing up the BB cups and has the pleasant side effect of not marking the anodised finish.
