A really nice looking model at a really nice price

I required a small loco shed for my new model railway layout. I looked at various other makes which were either unavailable or had too large a footprint. I had not even thought about Dapol until I saw an ad on eBay so I duly purchased this model. Dapol are quite open about the fact that the Kitmaster tooling used for these models is very old, therefore can and does have a bit of spurious flash in places (Kitmaster models were around when I was a kid). This does not cause any real problem with construction of the kit. The packaging is basic, but quite adequate and the enclosed instructions a lot easier to follow than some other manufacturers. Having now finished the building and painting of the model, I can honestly say that it looks good and is a perfect fit for my model railway. Excellent value and well done Dapol for continuing the Kitmaster range

  • Most critical review

    awful warping

i quiet like Dapol buildings and consider myself to be a fairly accomplished modeller and have built some really bad kits over the years but this engine shed tops the lot, warping on each wall and roof section is beyond a joke, even using various techniques to soften and reform the sections failed and the end result is fit only for the bin....

  • Worth while but needs work

I am especially pleased with this kit, despite it's age it still holds up when built and put next to more modern equivalents. The best thing with this kit it the provision to combine a second of this kit to double the shed's length. However the main problem that I have with this kit and with Dapol kit's in general is that they require a fair bit of work in order to get some of the parts to fit together. On my particular kit there wasn't too much flash to clean up apart from on the window pieces and the side panels were warped and required gentle heating to straighten out. Due to the age of the tooling the detail is not the best but by no means terrible, there is no interior detail to speak of so if you want a realistic interior that's up to you. Once painted though the exterior is very good. The front doors on this kit are slightly strange in that the small staff access on the main door is set really high, which required extensive modification to remedy. Granted this is because I intend on using this on my mini layout and wanted more realism, anyone just wanting a cheap engine shed wouldn't mind too much about the door placement. The instructions for the kit are a bit basic in my opinion but the kit is simple enough for that not to matter. I can definitely recommend this kit. Cheap, simple and still quite a convincing model. If you have the patience you'll love this kit.

  • A joy to build

Purchased 4 of this kit about 10 years ago to make a shed to hold 2 tenders engines now I have purchased another 4 kits and extended my shed to hold 4 tender engines. It’s great to now that these Dapol kits are still around and I love them. It’s great to see the finished item knowing that I have built it. 👍 Recommend this kit to anyone who loves building. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

  • Poor plastic quality ending in a wonky build

I bought this for sentimental value as I had an Airfix version as a child. Unfortunately the quality of the plastic now is very poor and there wasn't a straight part in the pack. Despite much bending and twisting it made into a very wonky model!

  • Great Features, That Would Be Lost Without Dapol !

The title says most all ! Some minor problems may be incurred due to the Airfix heritage of this kit. But if you follow Dapol's detailed instructions, these should be abled to be rectified be a competent modeller. Precise clear directions and instructions. Well done Dapol, for saving this range of model kits for us all !!!!

  • Difficult to get corner's fitting together well

Probably the worst kit I've ever assembled, the corner's take s lot of getting right, don't fit together very well, unlike the Dapol station building. Apart from that it is a good size for 009 and certainly looks the part.

  • Dapol Engine Shed is great for lockdown fun

Ive not had chance to assemble the kits yet. Arrived quickly and I am aware that Dapol kits do require a bit of fettling but that's part of the fun.

  • Yes, it IS old!

This is the same kit we oldies could buy in the 1960s for two shillings. But it is still a useful kit, and still value for money, built as per the instructions, doubled up, or otherwise 'kit-bashed' to produce any one of a hundred useful buildings. In fact I usually have a selection of the Dapol buildings kits 'in stock' for use in a number of ways - in whole or in part. Recommended to beginners and experts alike.
