    Armour-ous Thoughts!

I read in another review that it might have been a better idea to have included rollers in the adjustable jaw as against the plain alumininium casting, but apart from having to dismantle the two-piece casting to remove fash from the injection moulding process and lubricating both the thread and the spring-loaded stem, I found the tool to slide fairly effortlessly over the cable being scored. This was further improved by the application of a smear of petroleum jelly on the jaw beforehand. Curiously, the teeth of the saw blade that perform the scoring of the armour wires are arranged to do so on the 'back-stroke', so to speak! If one ignores the instructions and attempts to rotate the tool in the normal cutting direction for a toothed blade, the teeth bite fiercely into the sheath of the cable, resulting in an untidy scoring! Using any toothed blade to 'cut' on its back-stroke usually results in rapid wear of the blade; perhaps that's why five spare blades are included with the tool! I've prepped just four cable ends with the tool to date and found it to give particularly consistent and accurate scoring around the entire circumference of the cable, something which isn't always achieved when using a junior hacksaw. It is for this reason in particular that I would recommend this tool, especially if one is working regularly with SWA cables; for the occasional user however, it may be difficult to justify the cost of the tool versus the hacksaw! A well-made tool from a reliable manufacturer!

    Long...

CK say this tool is up to 50% quicker than a conventional method, ( junior hack saw ). I'd say its 100 - 150% slower. Also changing the blade on it and trying to retain the spares in their place is an absolute faff. The only good thing about this tool is it scores the steel nice and perpandicular so you get a neat place to put your gland. This tool will probably be good for newby sparks or someone who hasn't made off many SWAs.

  • Great tool for SWA cabling.

This is a hefty, well-built tool that - if the instructions are followed - really does make SWA stripping quick and easy. As a first timer with armoured cable, I tried a couple of times with offcuts of cable, and after getting the feel for it was able to make clean, even cuts every time. The first blade is still good after more than 20 uses. Hints: As above - read the instructions! Don't over-tighten the clamp and make sure you rotate in the correct direction.

  • Impressed

Wasn’t to sure about this at first. But I would try it having a garden lighting job about to start done around 60 swa glands this week I can say it is well worth the money took a couple of ends to get used to it but now it is great nice clean even ringing to the steel wire give it a try.

  • Armourslice

Contrary to some comments, just follow the instructions and it is very easy to use straight out of the box. Had a couple of trial runs on a piece of old cable and they were perfect every time. Make sure you turn it the correct way and it will do the job perfectly. Has a sprung head so even the cutting pressure is uniform every time. Spare blades in handle too and if you run out just cut up a hacksaw blade for more. 5 stars.

  • Stick to a junior hacksaw

Would love to "love" this product, but after many years of stripping SWA cable using a junior hacksaw, I'm still much faster doing it that way than with this laborious tool. So much faffing about just to score the wires.....Maybe an unskilled person would find it an advantage, but I'm not convinced.

  • Well designed and excellent value for money

The armourslice did exactly what was promised in the description. I found it very easy to use and to be durable. It came with a spare blade that I haven't had to use yet. Very competitively priced considering the excellent quality.

  • Old Spark, new tricks

Been making off SWA for years with a hacksaw. Taken on a new project, hundreds to make off without much space so tried this - cannot recommend it enough! One small thing, make sure you ring it well to stop the armour fishhooking. Thats it.
