Revell has done us proud with this kit.
I have been making model kits for over 60 years with my interest now being 1/24 scale trucks and emergency vehicles. This latest kit from Revell was promised nearly 12months ago and it was eagerly awaited. I guessed it would be a variant on the existing Revell fire engine kits namely the Mercedes Atego series which were an excellent choice and made up into first class replicas. The MAN TGM Schlingmann was finally released by Revell in April 2016 and I dually placed my order with one of the Ebay model shops. A big box arrived a few days later and I mean big by 1/24 standards, for me this is an exciting moment, removing the outer packaging to reveal a superbly printed box showing a painting of the completed MAN fire truck. I always take my time examining the box art before I slit the tape holding the lid on. The box was full of plastic bags with the plastic parts enclosed, it looked brilliant and I couldn’t wait to thumb through the instruction sheets. But they weren’t the usual sheets, this was a colour booklet, Revel have really done us proud this time. The kit chassis and superbly moulded cab appear to be new castings and as I had guessed the rear body and equipment has been taken from the previous kits with lots of familiar items. All parts are crisply moulded but perhaps I am little disappointed the all wheel drive chassis does not feature a steerable front axle, no worries though I can fashion my own version as I do like to pose the front wheels at an angle. This is an outstanding kit of good value and presents one or two challenges for some modifications like the front wheels, sliding shutters and perhaps a left hand drive version, and I have already decided to use gloss vinyl sheet to represent the gloss black glass areas.
