Not a "universal fit"
This stock will not fit a Remington 700 LA rifle with a J Lock bolt/bolt shroud. Even if you change the J Lock bolt shroud to a standard shroud the extended J Lock cocking piece will still hit the cheek piece when the bolt is fully retracted. That results in multiple possible consequences such as cleaning difficulty unless you carry a tool around to remove the screws. A real pain. Magpul should have modified the design of the LA stock moving the cheek piece further back but they instead chose to use the same stock spacing as the SA to obviously save production costs. That resulted in a failure on Magpul's part.
The nest problem is that the trigger guard screws from my LA 270 Winchester Remington 700 ADL with a synthetic stock were too short to install the Hunter 700 LA stock along with the Magpul LA Standard Magwell. The rear reached but only by 3 threads (not enough) and the front was about the same. This is addressed in the instructions but buyers need this addressed in the description of the stock before they buy it. This resulted in another, be it small, investment for 1/4" longer trigger guard screws that still had to fitted because they ended up too long and had to be ground down to the correct length.
Another "problem" is that if you intend to install this stock on a rifle, such as mine, with a standard profile barrel you will find the barrel to barrel channel fit a bit funky with way too much free space. In the 10/22 Hunter style stock they provided spacers to address the problem with different profile barrel dimensions. This is something they should have addressed with the Remington Hunter 700 stocks as well. Not everyone has a bull/heavy type barrel on their Remington 700 rifle and I'll wager that there are triple or greater the number of standard profile barreled 700's out there than bull barreled ones.
You have to drill and tap your own holes for sling swivels. Why couldn't Magpul have done this--and inserted sturdy metal inserts so that the swivels are secure? The rail mount areas require M-loc devises ONLY, so those of you with KeyMod items are out of luck. They have a hole on the stock for a QD swivel, but you have to buy a QD swivel receptacle to put into the hole. I guess whole (hole?) idea is to sell more Magpul stuff...I get that, but they could have made it easier. And why not have the trigger guards ready to ship when they released the stock?
What this stock isn't is a universal drop in stock. Be prepared to invest money and time into getting it installed depending on the model of Remington 700 LA rifle you have.
