Handy little tool in a low tech workshop

I've been looking for one of these that didn't include the stone because I already have several better stones. This came up at a very good price so I decided to just get it and see if I could finally put a decent edge on all my old chisels. It takes a bit of effort but I finally got one of them done and it made a lovely job of it. I used it with a belt sander to get the initial grind and then did the final angle and polish with a diamond stone. I'm not sure how long the little plastic wheels will last but it does a grand job as long as you're not in any hurry.

Not the best it could be. STANLEY, sharpen up!

Can't say much about the stone and the oil. It's a stone and a bottle of oil !! The honing guide isn't great and there are better ones available. The plastic honing angle guide is not good and you will generally find that your chisel isn't in the guide straight and you are sharpening your chisel at an angle across the blade. You then need to fiddle about with how the chisel is set in the guide and push the chisel forward a bit in order to take the squint angle back off the chisel blade then start again with your 25 and 30 degree angles. All a bit finnicky. You would be better just learning to hone your chisels by hand and eye.

  • Stanley Honing guide.

Hi what can I say, It's pressed steel with really flimsy plastic parts. The plastic angle guage is flimsy and not very good or accurate. The slot in the bottom plate is only good for Bevel chisels up to 3/4" after that they didn't fit in the groove. Plane blades are okay as they go flat against the bottom. The roller's are just cheap plastic and the one,s on my guide aren't even round, they have hollow's and ridge's on them. Beginning to think that a cheap one modified might have been better than this one.

  • Does what it says on the tin

I have completely revived the edges on 7 chisels which were new but blunt! and 2 new Planes, a shoulder plane and a block plane.. The honing guide and stone are easy to use, however a leather strop and conditioning compound are necessary to get the chisels so they are really sharp. The Wood Chisel/ Plane Honing Guide is a very good start The guide itself could be better made, it will be interesting to see how long the plastic inserts last for./ For the money, it has done what it said on the tin, and is a good first step to achieving razor sharp micro edges. The leather strop is necessary to remove the wire edge that will form as part of the sharpening process.

  • Not ~~Robust enough

I only bought this to use the blade holder for sharpening. The principle is very good, but the quality of the build remains to be seen. One of the adjusting screws came loose after a couple of uses. Otherwise it's not bad. The Stone "DRINKS" the lubricant, but any old thin oil is OK Not the greatest tool in the box.

  • Not a great piece of kit

I thought I'd get a well designed product from Stanley. The instructions are very basic, the mechanism has no means of making sure the tool is set perpendicular, other than by eye and the tightening system is primitive and difficult to use. Rubbish really.

  • I wish I'd bought something else

The oil stone is fine, the amount of honing oil supplied is minimal BUT the honing guide is awful, it's very fiddly to set up and difficult to get a chisel, for example, exactly perpendicular to achieve the correct even hone across the blade, the alignment markings on the tool are way too vague - I'm going to have to buy another honing guide - ideally I'd like my money back.

  • Sharpener guide and stine

Good tool particularly liked the measuring tab to set the angle. As with all tools nowadays, would prefer it not in a single use plastic wrap, happier still if it was wood and a long term storage box .

  • Sharp at last.

An angle guide for sharpening carpentry tools and various other things, on the face of it, seemed to be a worthwhile purchase. In fact it turned out to be, I now have accurately sharpened chisels and plane blades, which is what I initially bought the items for. A bonus for me is that I can now sharpen very efficiently various knives. No problems have arisen so far and I do not expect any, in my opinion I have made a very good purchase of a very useful package.

  • Not unto Stanley Tools normal standards

Awkward to adjust to hold blade in place for honing , moving adjustment plat constantly sticks & requires a lot of fiddling to get it to reset. Not what I expected from a Stanley product. On the bright side Tool Station were the cheapest supplier so no big loss.
