Pretty good for the price and it does the job but only just

Quite a good little device for the money especially as it was reduced price making it a decent deal. The build isn't tacky so it can easily do the job intended. The negative side is that any device that is powered by only two 1.5 volt batteries making just 3 volts in total isn't going to have very much power to amplify so even through headphones or ear-buds the sound can be so quiet it needs to be plugged into a HiFi amplifier by cable from the earphone socket. It's basic and does the job I wanted. Fast forward and rewind is a bit slow but any faster would bring the battery down heavily. I don't feel my money was wasted. So I give it 4 stars losing one for very low amplification power.

    Built to a price

I decided to combine my walks with listening to old language cassettes I couldn't be bothered to digitise. This seems to be the only 'walkman' that's now available . So in that respect it is Hobson's choice. The price reflects the quality. the buttons are flimsy and don't always engage (hold down) on first pressing. How long it will last is in question. The inclusion of a radio and a fairly horrible pair of headphones means the price is an even greater bargain. But I'd be happier to pay more for less features and a better build quality. But I may be fluent in the language before it busts. And if so it's a bargain.

  • Very easy to attach to belt and delighted it has radio too.

I bought this as a birthday present for my 87 year old brother, he loves to walk and listen to his favorite singers while out, so perfect for him and others who still have cassette tapes.

  • Too much noise to understand the recoding. Useless.

The background noise is unbelievable. That includes mechanical noise and audio distortion. It can very easily make it impossible to hear or understand what is recorded. If you try to record a conversation, you need speakers taking turn holding the recorder so that the microphone is about 1 foot away from their mouth (about 30cm) and you need to make sure they talk into it. If you try to put the recorder between two speakers and record their conversation, you won't be able to hear much (if anything) apart from loads of noise. Such noise is several times louder than the voices being recorded. I got two of them (bought at the same time) and they behave identically, which would rule out a defective unit. It's just useless. It can use batteries or USB for power, but if you record using batteries and play back using USB it goes faster and you hear cartoon-like voices going about 50% faster than normal. You can use it as a paperweight, though, if you don't need to much weight. I can't believe it passed any quality tests, so I have to assume it didn't go through any. You can't plug in an external microphone, so you can't go around the issue, either. I recorded the same meeting using both recorders, brand new quality batteries and identical cassettes; however, one recorder got to the end of the cassette much earlier than the other, meaning the speed is very inconsistent. Even if you use it to take audio notes to listen to them later, you need to be very careful about the orientation of the microphone and the distance to your mouth to be able to hear your voice. Even when you manage that, the background noise coming from the mechanics of the recorder and the electronic noise are so loud that make it difficult to listen to the recording. The internal speaker is basically useless, as it's not very loud and most of the sound coming from it is noise, so you can't understand the voices recorded. If you want to record music using the microphone, there is no point in even trying due to noise. The frequency response is poor, with inconsistent mids, rolled off bass and almost inexistent highs.

  • Good product

This works very efficiently and plays tapes at the right speed unlike another of a better known brand we bought a while ago

  • A good lookiong player but the operation and sound quality are somewhat disappointing. But considering the price I must not complain too much.

The walkman's sound quality is tolerable but a bit tinny; however the case and the operation is fairly smooth although to find the tuning into a radio channel is a bit fiddly. The player case is quite well finished and comparable to my old Sony Walkman. I have not tried the recording mode and I do not have any intention to do so.

  • A nostalgic blast from the past.

A real blast from the past. There are very few new cassette players of this type on the market so I was delighted to purchase it at the price advertised. I can now play all my cassettes on a player similar to the one I used 30 years ago. Such nostalgia!

  • Just right for listening to my old tapes

Nice to have when using my exercise bike. Produces sound of a surprisingly good quality from both tapes and FM radio. Easy to use and good value for the money.
