ReviewsThis series could easily be titled "movers and shakers in world history." Each subject has, in his time, disrupted the status quo through military, political, or exploratory leadership. These are the folk who are found in history classes, often taking up residence in assigned reports. The books offer good glimpses into the subjects' lives and the world-shaping events surrounding them. Oliver Cromwell and the English Civil War starts out with a whack, as London watches the beheading of Charles I on January 30, 1649. The conflicts between Oliver Cromwell, the king, and Parliament are then delineated. The Race for the North Pole and Robert Peary opens with a brief biography of Peary and then focuses on the various polar expeditions. It is amazing to discover just how many people were willing to risk all to set foot on a piece of ice at the top of the world.
